BC Métis Federation Keeping Commitments to Métis Community Support

BCMF Keeps commitment to community support(Vancouver, BC) The BC Métis Federation has stated since establishment in June 2011 that Métis community support for culture and decision making is the priority. The BC Métis Federation leaders recognize that the support for Métis communities and families can be achieved through focusing on the needs of the community rather than solely on the needs of a provincial organization. This past weekend BC Métis Federation showcased their dedication to supporting Métis communities through a variety of activities. This included BC Métis Federation representatives attending the funeral of Métis elder Marge Goulet, provided a report during the Vancouver Métis Cultural Society Annual General Meeting, showcased Métis culture as part of the Eurofest Event in Burnaby, and attended the Nova Métis Heritage Association board meeting in Surrey.

BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry stated; “The BC Métis Federation has a great team of dedicated individuals who recognize that together we can make a difference. Our team pulls together to support our Métis culture without honorariums, travel claims, or any other support than our own. We know we need to assist the rebuilding of our Nation here in BC and this starts with leading be example.”

President Henry added; “As the President I am so thankful to our VP Daryl Piper who drove over 12 hours to Quesnel and back with me to pay our respects to the Goulet family and friends for the loss of their dear loved one Marge. I also thank Joe Desjarlais and Ken Fisher who attended the Vancouver Métis Cultural Society meeting to provide a report and show their community that the BC Métis Federation cares and their voice counts. I thank Maxime and Phil Lavallee, the Silver Tip Swingers and Buttertown Jiggers for their support to pull together a great Métis showcase during Eurofest. There were about 2000 people in attendance and it was a huge success. Finally I thank Tim St. Denis for attending the Nova Heritage Association board meeting to provide a report on behalf of the BC Métis Federation. Of course I cannot forget Beverly Lambert who was with us in Quesnel and Sherry Daniels who attended Eurofest on our behalf to assist.”

BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “I hope other Métis communities and families understand that BC Métis Federation cares and our commitments and support for Métis culture and community needs will not stop. We have a great team and our efforts this weekend make me proud to be Métis once again. Thank you all!”

Just wanted to say thank you BCMF members and dedicated volunteers, we truly appreciate the representation put forward by BC Métis Federation and the solidarity shown by a firm that listens to its constituents.

I just want to say I do recognize the commitment and sacrifices put forward by all the good folks that Keith has mentioned above and the behind the scene folks and family members that support this wonderful team in order that they can represent us.

Thanks again Keith, we are watching and know that by example you truly are the leaders the grassroots metis people need.

    Tansi all:
It seem a lot of soon to be ex-mnbc members are finally driven to the end of their belief in the mnbc. .
I have had 10 e-mails and phone calls from (soon to be ex -mnbc) members on Vancouver Island.

First as I agreed to not reveal their names, however all agreed to allow what district/area they are from .

    2 from the Greater Victoria.
    1 from Naniamo
    1 from Port Alberni
2 from Campbell River ( not my cousins who are already in the North Saanich Michif Soc.)
    3 from Duncan/Cowichan area
    1 from Parksville

All are from mnbc Chartered Locals and are hoping their local will align with the BCMF.
Some I have communicated with over the years since I was in B.C. Métis politics in the 1990s.
I am delighted I was chosen by many as a source of honest information.

As I was trusted with their contacts and questions I have no intention of losing that trust by disclosing their names.

The many questions asked was who was really behind the BCMF ?
My answer was what you see on our website.

How many the M.N.C. definition members does the New North Saanich Michif Society have ?
    Answer: Over 40 and building.

What advice can you give in leaving or staying with their present local ?

Answer: Stay with the local if you are happy with the people but change the Executive if you have lost confidence in them.

What is your North Saanich Michif Society’s view on Enbridge and restarting a Métis Cultural event as Red River West ?

Answer: On June 9th our next general meeting at 1 to 4 p.m. in the St Andrew’s Church Hall at 3rd street Sidney B.C. the issue of Voting on resolution of Opposition to Enbridge Pipeline as( the BCMF and Cowichan Métis Organization has done).will happen with my opinion it will pass with a large majority in favour.
The idea of a resurrection of Red River West or another Métis type event is also on our agenda, with or without other Métis Community’s

In short I appreciate the faith and interest that many have expressed in contacting me, but realistically we have hopes that established locals will make their own choices and retain their organizations with the proviso of signing a letter of cooperation with the BCMF .

Thank you all who sent e-mails or phoned.

Vice President of the North Saanich Michif Society

I agree whole heartedly Robin… this board has done more for community capacity in the year than MNBC has done in years. The intent is genuine in supporting Metis communities lead by example. I remember promises by MNBC to assist community building a few years ago, and after Keith left that vision disappeared. Glad to see the vision reemerging with a new organization. An organization is nothing without its citizen base, and those volunteers who make things happen.

It is disappointing that industry and government dollars are being absorbed by this leviathan that has absolutely NO COMMUNITY MANDATE. No wonder the CEO resigned, I doubt I would want to be a CEO in the lead at the MNBC at this time while MNBC signs deals to profit only the staff, and the supporters, while riding on the backs of our citizenship cards.

I am so proud to be part of the BCMF and what the BCMF has accomplished in such a short period of time. The BC Metis Federation has strong leadership and I want to thank all of the Board members along with our volunteer staff and all BCMF members who have made all of this possible and a special thank you to BCMF President Keith Henry who has faced many challenges and even risked his career for the Metis people.

BCMF will continue to work with our communities in their best interests and ensure the survival of our culture and engage our youth to be proud of their heritage. Our youth are our future.

It has been a pleasure to volunteer my time to a organization that believes in PEOPLE not the money they can steal from communities and youth.

I receive calls and letters on a daily base for applications for BCMF, and they are from former MNBC members that are very disgruntled with the way Mr. Dumont runs the organization.

They want accountability and honesty, which they are not receiving from Mr. Dumont and his clan.

MNBC decides where and what happens with no say from their citizens, that is why I`m proud to be a BCMF follower.
