(Williams Lake, BC) The Cariboo Chilcotin Métis Association (CCMA) continued their work as a Métis community this past weekend to promote family and culture by holding their annual Felker Lake Métis Festival. The Felker Lake Métis Festival is a Mètis celebration for CCMA members and is open to the public to share in Métis culture for one weekend near Williams Lake each summer. This year CCMA, like so many other Métis community organizations, the leadership within CCMA struggles to ensure event costs are covered.
BC Métis Federation board member and cultural leader Rene Therrien attended and performed all weekend long to support CCMA. Not only did BC Métis Federation representatives assist performances, the BC Métis Federation made a $500.00 donation to support the overall Felker Lake Métis Festival costs.
BC Métis Federation President Henry stated, “I was proud to be able to assist CCMA leadership in one small way with a contribution on behalf of the BC Métis Federation. As a board the BC Métis Federation have agreed that community and culture are paramount to our values and future work. We agreed that the BC Métis Federation must lead by example and that we need to support Métis communities at the community level. Once again we have shown our commitments and dedication by supporting cultural performances where possible and providing a small donation to assist.”
BC Métis Federation President Henry added, “The BC Métis Federation has raised modest resources to support community events. We used our entrepreneurial spirit and volunteer our time and travelled on our own expense to ensure some support was possible. I am so proud of the entire BC Métis Federation board and staff who showcase each day that there is a better way to support Métis people and communities.”
BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “CCMA leadership held a successful Felker Lake Métis Festival and the families and CCMA members had a weekend of fun and cultural pride to showcase. I congratulate their board and members and thank them all for working together to celebrate who we are as Métis people in Williams Lake and across the province.”
