World Festival in Richmond Signals Close of Summer Métis Cultural Events

Richmond, BC – The BC Métis Federation leadership is celebrating the final Métis cultural event for the summer in 2015 with the completion of successful activities this past weekend in Richmond, BC. BC Métis Federation partnered with the Michif Historical and Cultural Preservation Society to set up the Métis cultural pavilion as part of the first Richmond World Festival. The Métis pavilion hosted hundreds of non Aboriginal visitors in attendance throughout the one day event which had thousands of people attend the Richmond World Festival from 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM.

BC Métis Federation President Henry stated; “We had a major turnout at the Richmond event on Saturday September 5th. Thank you to the Michif Historical and Cultural Preservation Society for ensuring this Métis pavilion was set up utilizing the organizations rich cultural assets. Thank you to our Métis jiggers Rowan Pickering and Quinn Pickering. Thank you to Mechtild Morin who was teaching traditional Métis sash fingering weaving throughout the day. In fact Mechtild was extremely busy throughout the day and ran out of supplies due to the high demand. Finally thanks to all who helped setup & support such as our office manager Sherry Daniels and special recognition to Derrick White3skycloud and Marina Shelemba Willey.”

BC Métis Federation President Henry added, “Our leadership has been committed to Métis culture and this summer reached many people. We started in Burnaby with support for Eurofest in May and carried out activities throughout June to September in Fort St. John, Surrey, Terrace, Prince George, Williams Lake/McLeese Lake, Vancouver and other locations. The BC Métis Federation efforts introduced Métis cultural to tens of thousands of non Aboriginal British Columbians/Canadians plus thousands of our own Métis community. Since 2012 our leadership has supported this “summer of cultural” campaign and the results have proven excellent.”

BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “There is much more to do and thank you to key partners such as TransCanada, Kinder Morgan, Enbridge, and others who have provided direct support to enable many of the Métis cultural activities over the years. BC Métis Federation leadership is based on our culture in all that we do and this past weekend was a great way to complete the 2015 summer. Thank you to everyone because without culture there is nothing difference in anything we do.”
