BC Métis Celebrates First Anniversary Despite the Odds

(Vancouver, BC) The BC Métis Federation officially launched as a new Métis provincial representative organization on June 11th, 2011 with an event entitled a Métis Gathering held in Vancouver exactly one year ago. Today the BC Métis Federation leadership has proven their vision that has included a commitment to Métis communities as the BC Mètis Federation strives to provide a true democratic alternative for Métis in British Columbia given the years of mismanagement and undemocratic practices of the Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC).

In June 2011 BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry and the board made commitments for a new membership application process, a new BCMF website, and BCMF would arrange community meetings throughout British Columbia. Not only has BC Métis Federation kept these commitments, they have been far surpassed without any government or industry support, a true testament to the resolve of Métis people in this province involved with the BC Métis Federation.
BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry stated, “I am so proud of our board of directors, members, Métis communities who have agreed to work with us, and hundreds of volunteers that have stepped up to support a better future for Métis representation in BC. The last year has surpassed my own personal goals as the founding President. We have been to the communities throughout BC, we have stood up for what is right time and time again without fear, and we have put Métis culture and the needs of Métis communities ahead of anything we do.”

President Henry added, “There have been many who have tried to stop us this past year but failed. The BC Mètis Federation is growing in respect from our Métis people and the First Nations communities and clearly we are seen as an organization who understands the importance of community in all that we do. I believe the BC Métis Federation is respected as an organization that truly cares for the Métis people.”

BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “We are the right track and we have so much momentum. The main stream media is now reporting on two Métis organizations in BC, First Nations recognize our mandate, and Métis people and community organization throughout BC continue to support our work. There really is no stopping the development of the BC Métis Federation and we are here to stay. I offer a thought for the few remaining Métis supporters with MNBC who continue to remain supportive appearing blind to the facts that the current MNBC board ruined that organization in only 4 short years. I reach out and welcome everyone, including these few MNBC supporters, to the BC Métis Federation. Together we can make a better future for our families and communities. We need to strength and leadership now more than ever.”
