(Vancouver, BC) BC Métis Federation has continued to proceed with their human rights claim against the Provincial and Federal Governments filed in January 2013. The human rights claims were based on discrimination of access and representation to programs and policy consultation and decisions regarding specific federal and provincial issues. Today both the BC Human Rights Tribunal and Canadian Human Rights Commission have accepted the claims of discrimination.
The Provincial Government has taken steps with BC Métis Federation to schedule a mediation process as a first step. BC Métis Federation representatives are now finalizing preparations for their settlement meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 29th in Vancouver beginning at 9:30 AM next week.
BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry stated, “This settlement meeting next week presents an important opportunity for the Provincial Government to take immediate steps to review Métis policy, consultation and program engagement. “
BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry added, “Our leadership is optimistic but also practical and committed. We are moderating expectations and preparing for a full judicial process to address the issues we have raised.”
BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “Our leadership can ensure the members, partner communities, and partner agencies that their voices will not be ignored any further. There is only one acceptable outcome; immediate meaningful recognition by the Provincial Government of the BC Métis Federation, our partner communities and members including governance, program needs, and Métis cultural support.”
