Vancouver, British Columbia, April 8th, 2025 — The BC Métis Federation (BCMF) is increasingly concerned about growing division amongst Métis across the country in light of the recent release of an Expert Panel Report by the Métis National Council (MNC). The report, titled “National Definition of Métis: A Review of Communities in Ontario,” reaffirms the deep and enduring ties between the seven historic Métis communities in northern Ontario and the larger Métis Nation.
The report provides clear evidence of the shared culture, history, and political alliances that have existed across the Métis Homeland for generations, supported by decades of research. It also references the landmark Powley decision by the Supreme Court of Canada, which affirmed that Métis communities, particularly in Ontario, possess constitutionally protected rights on par with other Indigenous groups, setting an important precedent for the recognition and definition of Métis rights across Canada.
BCMF is disappointed to witness the response of other Métis organizations to the Expert Panel report. At a time when Métis need to be coming together in unity, these organizations seem preoccupied with their own interests, and their responses only serve to promote further division amongst Métis.
BCMF President Keith Henry stated, “Now, more than ever, Métis need a strong and unified national voice to represent their interests. The focus must shift back to supporting unity and cooperation across Métis communities, prioritizing the advancement of shared goals and values.”
It is vital for all Métis people to come together and ensure that every voice is included in shaping the future of the Métis Nation. BCMF calls on Métis leaders and communities across Canada to engage in open, meaningful dialogue and strengthen cooperative efforts to heal divisions and move forward together in unity.
