Vancouver, British Columbia, May 15, 2024 — In response to the deepening crisis in the Fort Nelson region due to the Parker Lake wildfire, BC Métis Federation (BCMF) has expanded the Emergency Assistance Program to cover wildfire evacuation expenses.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from the Fort Nelson area as the Parker Lake wildfire continues to grow. Wildfire evacuation orders have significant financial and health implications for BCMF members in the region, and BCMF has expanded the Emergency Assistance Program to help bridge the gap.

“Evacuations due to wildfire risk are extremely destabilizing,” said Keith Henry, BCMF President. “That’s why BCMF wants to do anything we can to help during this tumultuous time.”

The “Wildfire Evacuation Expenses” portion of the Emergency Assistance Program is available to full members of the BC Métis Federation who have had to evacuate their home community due to a wildfire evacuation order. Individuals can apply to receive $250 and families can apply to receive $500, and applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

To apply, fill in the short form on this application page. For assistance or more information on the program, reach out to Kevin Henry via email at CommunityHealth@BCMetis.com.
