Do all Métis in BC Have Equitable Access to Services – No

BC Métis Federation is sharing an important report completed this week which was an environmental scan reviewing alleged Metis programs and services available to Métis in BC.

For years BC Métis Federation members have been reporting that they can’t access basic services such as health care, employment and training, child and family, etc for a variety of reasons.

Therefore BC Métis Federation contracted two independent consultants to review the actual on the ground situation in BC and the findings and report are clear about key inequality and lack of accessibility for all Métis people in BC. The report provides four key recommendations:

  1. Challenges with Métis access to information;
  2. There needs to be more equitable access to Métis services for all Métis;
  3. There needs to be accountable distribution of Métis program funds;
  4. There needs to be increased Métis specific resources

There is never a more important time to address this than in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis which is significantly impacting BC Métis Federation members and no Métis safety or investment support has been provided to our 3100 members.

We strongly encourage the members to read the report. Thank you to consultants Marlane Christensen and Dr. Janet Newbury for this critical work.
