(Vancouver, BC) BC Metis Federation completed an important weekend of Métis culture work. This past weekend BC Métis Federation, along with the Nova Métis Heritage Association (Nova) in Surrey and the Cariboo Chilcotin Métis Association (CCMA), successfully implement the launch of the BC Métis Federation’s first ever Michif Language workshops in partnership with Canadian Heritage through the Aboriginal Peoples Program (APP). Each of the partner communities held their first of several Michif language workshops to be held from January – March 2015 this past Saturday with strong attendance.
This was followed on Sunday when the BC Métis Federation hosted the Eurofest BC Society’s annual potluck. Eurofest BC Society is a nonprofit organization located in Burnaby, BC that works to promote cultural awareness of several European cultures. BC Métis Federation agreed to co-host the potluck event and used the opportunity to showcase and provide education about Métis culture to roughly 100 individuals in attendance.
BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry stated, “Thank you to our partner communities, their leadership, and our staff who worked together to introduce the Michif Language workshops. Our Michif language is in desperate need for support and education in order to survive. We are off to a great start and I encourage al local members to consider attending future workshops.” BC Métis Federation President Henry added; “The weekend was quite busy and our time with friends from the Eurofest Society was equally as exciting. Our cultural team lead by JJ Lavallee, Rowan and Quinn Pickering, Mechtild Morin, Patty Rosvold, Derrick Whiteskycloud, and many others provided an excellent education, food experience, and fun for the attendees.”
BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “Thank you to Canadian Heritage and so many partners. This past weekend continued to showcase our cultural commitment as an organization and it was exciting to see other community representatives attend and assist.” Be sure to check out the videos and pictures from the Michif workshops and Eurofest potluck on our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BCMetis.
