BC Métis Federation board members met this past weekend in West Vancouver and there was a number of key issues and governance items to address. The agenda addressed a number of topics including updating financial information, approval of an auditor, consultation project review, cultural project updates, plus many other items. (West Vancouver, BC) BC Métis Federation board members met this past weekend in West Vancouver and there was a number of key issues and governance items to address. The agenda addressed a number of topics including updating financial information, approval of an auditor, consultation project review, cultural project updates, plus many other items.
A number of key decisions were made including the following:
Partner communities will be provided $250.00 each to support Christmas events for their communities;
- The BC Mètis Federation Christmas party will be held December 13th in partnership with Nova Métis Heritage Association in Surrey;
- Michif language workshops for Williams Lake and Surrey planned;
- The BC Mètis Federation financial statements will be fully audited in conjunction with the current fiscal year which ends March 31st, 2015; and
- Portfolio’s were assigned to the board members as follows: o Baillie Redfern – Health /Youth o Jeanie Cardinal – Children and Family/Community Development
- JJ Lavallee – Youth
- Gloria Rendell – Economic Development
- Betty Fisher – Children and Family
- Joe Desjarlais – Education/Natural Resources
- Ken Fisher – Membership/Housing
- Maxine Lavallee – Culture
- Rene Therrien – Culture
- Patrick Pocha – Housing/Natural Resources
- Marlene Swears – Community Development
- Deborah Canada – TBD
BC Métis Federation Vice President Rene Therrien stated, “This was an important governance meeting. I am committed to culture and in my new role as Vice President, I will lead a new cultural committee who will now undertake to plan for cultural events in 2015. The meeting was productive and we made a number of decisions to serve our communities.” BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “Our board addressed a number of issues. Since the election in September there has been a few bumps but as a board we are learning to work together to address issues and concerns. We provided a thorough review of the financials from 2011-2014 and there was strong consensus on recognizing the contributions and work to continue building the BC Métis Federation. I am very proud of all of our board members to learning to be direct and open but for the betterment of our members and communities. I can say with confidence that our decisions support all members and communities and we are poised for strong growth in the future.
