Vancouver, British Columbia, April 17, 2025 — The BC Métis Federation (BCMF) is proud to announce the official launch of Learn Michif, a new mobile app developed to support the revitalization and everyday use of the Michif-French language. Designed for individuals, families, educators, and communities, the app is now available as a free download on both Android and iOS, and features a searchable glossary of Michif-French words and phrases, each accompanied by audio recordings to support correct pronunciation.
Learn Michif was developed as part of BCMF’s ongoing work to preserve and promote the Michif-French language. As a critically endangered language and an essential part of Métis cultural heritage, Michif-French is at the heart of BCMF’s cultural revitalization efforts. The app offers an engaging, user-friendly platform that supports learners at all levels. It allows users to learn at their own pace while helping to integrate Michif-French into daily conversation and cultural practice.
“This app is an important step forward in making Michif-French more accessible and integrated into daily life,” said Jeanie Cardinal, BCMF’s Director of Culture and Language. “Whether someone is learning a single word or preparing to teach a class, this tool helps bring the language back into community spaces where it belongs.”
The development of Learn Michif was made possible through support from Heritage Canada. The project also benefited from the invaluable contributions of fluent Michif speakers, including Rene Therrien and Earl Belcourt, who lent their voices, knowledge, and lived experience to ensure the accuracy and cultural integrity of the content.
