Métis Community Meeting in Fort St. John

(Fort St. John, BC) BC Métis Federation continued their commitment to supporting community partners on Saturday, May 7th by attending the Métis community meeting in Fort St. John. The Fort St. John Métis Society (FSJMS) held their annual meeting to provide members an update on the activities of the society as well as discuss their vision for the future. FSJMS represents approximately 800 members from Fort St. John and area and has signed a partnership agreement with BC Métis Federation in 2012.

BC Métis Federation President Henry stated; “The members were interested in the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision in the Daniels Case. There were several questions raised and I provided our interpretation and understandings. The leadership of FSJMS President Jacqueline Alderking arranged their own forum with lawyer Christopher Devlin on May 28th and this an excellent step.”

BC Métis Federation Henry added; “Members appreciated the results of our partnership this past year as BC Métis Federation contributed to various activities to assist the organization. We reviewed the latest BC Métis Federation spring newsletter and the court case of foster child SS was also discussed. I thank President Alderking, their board and members for such a strong reception. BC Métis Federation shared our latest efforts to support FSJMS including future cultural support, community capacity and other exciting initiatives.”

BC Métis Federation concluded; “The one significant challenge has been the lac of support by BC Hydro to include the actual Métis community in the development of Site C. This hydroelectric project is moving forward with no real consultation or accommodation for this community while the Métis Nation British Columbia has been provided hundreds of thousands of dollars. I reiterated that this must change one day.”
