(Langley, BC) BC Métis Federation developed and design a Métis cross cultural education program for governments, industry, and any other institution or organization to learn about Métis cultural and perspectives. The program is called Métis Connect and BC Métis Federation has delivered a number of workshops by request to various organizations since its design and launch in 2012.
The Metis Connect Workshops developed by the BC Mètis Federation returned to Trinity Western University (TWU) earlier this week on September 17th to a warm welcome by TWU professor and students. BC Mètis Federation board member and seminar presenter Mr. Joe Desjarlais along with BC Métis Federation Vice President Mr. Daryl Piper were invited by Dr. Matthew Etherington to the School of Education in their course entitled “Indigenous Issues in Education”.
Mr. Desjarlais stated, “It was a privilege to speak to this amazing group of upcoming leaders in our schools. I talked about the importance of ‘story’ as a Métis person by drawing on my personal journey to identity and talking about some persistent negative images that have impacted my ability to be Metis.” BC Métis Federation Vice President Mr. Daryl Piper added, “It was a very heartfelt experience and makes all our efforts worth it. The students were thirsty for knowledge about being Metis. They learned who we are and how we fit into the Canadian fabric.”
Joe Desjarlais concluded, “Students were invited to think critically as upcoming teachers about their upcoming role in translating the Metis ‘story’ in and through their classrooms. They left with an invitation to view Metis education less as a ‘system’ or ‘process’ but more as a responsibility to cultivate meaningful stories that better describe a dynamic people and communities and their significance in Canada.”
