Métis People in BC Speak Loud and Clear – No to Enbridge

(Vancouver, BC) The BC Métis Federation has released the results of a poll conducted to better assess the views of Métis people throughout BC regarding Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines project. The online poll was completed by 480 respondents and there was participation from all regions of British Columbia. The results of the key survey questions present strong conclusions and there are three key messages:

  1. 91% of the Métis people surveyed do not support the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines project;
  2. Less than 1% of the respondents agreed there has been proper consultation regarding the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines Project
  3. Less than 1% of the respondents agreed MNBC has provided any project consultation.

BC Métis Federation President Henry stated, “The results are clear and any Métis leadership must respect the overwhelming views of Métis constituents in BC. There was a great response to this survey and the number of respondents demonstrates how serious this issue is for many Métis people.”

President Henry added, “MNBC has been provided consultation resources by Enbridge over the years so what was accomplished? Where are the MNBC minutes or notes from any community engagement? Frankly it would not matter now as there is enough public information for Métis people to research and people are drawing their own conclusions and saying no, no matter what alleged benefits there might be, it is not worth the risk.”

President Henry concluded, “The BC Métis Federation will present a comprehensive review of the results during the show Métis Coffee Talk tonight at 7:30 PM. MNBC has yet to deny signing the benefits deal with Enbridge so many of us draw our own assumptions. This weekend I expect that MNBC will do their best to convince their Métis Nation Governing Assembly Members why this is such a great deal. Métis people do not want to support this project for a few benefits years down the road. BC Métis Federation is drafting a resolution for the board to review in March given these undeniable results. Thank you to all Métis people who took the time to exercise their democratic right to register their views. That is how BC Métis Federation makes decisions, based on the grassroots people.”

Métis Coffee Talk will be live tonight at 7:30 PM and you can access on the BC Métis Federation website www.bcmetis.com.
