Co-Developing Community Response Project

The BC Métis Federation (BCMF) has partnered with the Canadian Coast Guard on the Co-Developing Community Response Project to build strong communication and knowledge on marine issues between the Canadian Coast Guard, BCMF and its members.

West Coast Water Protectors

BC Métis Federation has developed a roster of members to participate in several months of study through cooperation with the Canadian Coast Guard. These 8 members will receive training and certification in incident management, emergency response and communications through the Justice Institute of B.C. and Marine First Aid through Life Preservers.  They started at the beginning of September 2021 with graduation anticipated for the Spring.

Recently, the team met for a training session and to gather feedback on the recent and ongoing marine incidents being experienced on the coast and participated in an abandoned vessel exercise. You can view the presentation here.

Get involved

BCMF is currently building a “Marine Incidents Recipient List” for any members that are interested in timely updates from the Canadian Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is now sending bulletins to BCMF whenever there are pollution reports, large-scale incidents, or vessel-related reports. If you would like to be added to the Marine Incidents Recipient List, or to help us gather your feedback about the Canadian Coast Guard and Incident Management, please fill out this form.

BCMF Member Survey - Coast Guard Communications

BC Metis Federation is currently in the third and final year of the Co-Developing Community Response Project. Throughout the course of this project, BCMF has been gathering data and feedback from the membership on the Canadian Coast Guard and Incident Management in British Columbia.  We hope to continue these programs and build infrastructure to report on and assist in the event of Emergencies, and Incidents that take place along the coastline and across the Province.
