Set the Tone – Victoria Community Session

The BC Métis Federation is currently engaging with the Provincial government on a race-based data collection project.

The project aims to tackle systemic racism in the public sector. To understand the extent of the problem, Indigenous, Black/People of African descent and other racialized communities have advocated for race-based data collection in support of ending systemic racism.  As a first step in the process of developing specific guidelines (i.e., legislation) around race-based information gathering, the government has provided an Anti-Racism Engagement Grant to BC Métis Federation so that it can hear from our partner communities.

We want to know your thoughts on:

  • how would you like to be represented by the information that is gathered?
  • the kind of information that should be collected?
  • who should have access to the information that is gathered?
  • how the information is interpreted and used?

Your participation in this process will eventually help to identify the gaps and barriers that exist within the public sector (for example: health care, education, policing, courts, government services) for racialized persons so that the BC Government can provide better and more equitable services.

When participating in this conversation you can be confident that:

  • Your participation is voluntary and anonymous.
  • You can decide not to participate at any time.

No personal information such as names or contact information is collected (unless it is for the purpose of meeting Public Health Orders), you can relay as little or as much information as you feel comfortable in sharing, and you can choose not to participate at any time.  All responses that are reported to the government will be generalized and unspecified.

You can participate in the following ways:

The BC Métis Federation will facilitate online Anti-Racism Data Legislation Community Engagement sessions over Zoom.  We anticipate a number of local community virtual meetings as well as a provincial virtual meeting.

If your community has not planned a meeting date and you are interested in participating in a session as an individual in the Province-wide meeting, you can visit that event page here.
