A Time to Reflect – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Each year on September 30th, Canadians mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR). It is a time for everyone—Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike—to reflect on the lasting impacts of colonization, acknowledge the healing that is still needed, and come together in a shared commitment to building a better future.

The BC Métis Federation (BCMF) encourages all British Columbians to pause and consider the legacy of residential schools, as well as the ongoing effects of generational trauma and systemic racism on Métis, First Nations, and Inuit Peoples. It is also an opportunity to reflect on our individual responsibilities in advancing truth and reconciliation.

For those seeking new ways to engage, BCMF recommends Decolonization and Me: Conversations about Healing a Nation and Ourselves. Released only weeks ago, the book invites readers to confront denialism, biases, privilege, and the path forward—both personally and nationally. It is co-authored by Phyllis Webstad, founder of Orange Shirt Day, and Métis scholar Kristy McLeod.

BCMF also invites you to read a recent op-ed by President Keith Henry, published in the National Observer. In it, he reflects on how Métis stories have too often been misrepresented or excluded from Canada’s historical record, and highlights the important role Indigenous tourism can play in education, connection, and building pathways to healing.

For those in the Clearwater area, we encourage you to attend the NDTR gathering at the Dutch Lake Community Centre (209 Dutch Lake Road). The open house runs from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, followed by dinner.

Please note that the BCMF offices will be closed on Tuesday, September 30, in recognition of NDTR, and will reopen the following day.
