Vancouver, British Columbia, April 25, 2025 — The BC Métis Federation offers its condolences following the passing of Pope Francis, joining communities across Canada and around the world in recognizing his contributions.
Pope Francis will be remembered as the first leader of the Catholic Church to publicly acknowledge and apologize for the institution’s role in Canada’s residential school system. He delivered this historic apology during his 2022 visit to Canada—a significant moment in the broader process of truth and reconciliation.
Although an apology cannot undo the deep and lasting harm caused by residential schools, Pope Francis’s words represented an important step in validating the experiences of survivors and acknowledging the pain endured by generations of Indigenous families. His engagement with Indigenous leaders during his visit demonstrated a willingness to confront difficult truths and foster respectful dialogue.
The BC Métis Federation encourages the Catholic Church to continue along the path of reconciliation laid in part by Pope Francis—one built on accountability, transparency, and enduring respect for Indigenous peoples and their histories.
