Vancouver, British Columbia, April 14, 2025 — The BC Métis Federation (BCMF), in partnership with the North Thompson Aboriginal Cultural Centre Society (NTACCS), proudly hosted a community luncheon on April 12th at the Dutch Lake Community Centre in Clearwater, BC, to announce a new wildfire protection initiative for Elders and families. The event celebrated a milestone in wildfire preparedness for the region and honoured the ongoing partnership between BCMF and NTACCS, which spans over 12 years.
Throughout the 2024-25 fiscal year, BCMF’s Conservation Department collected donations from across the province—both online and at community events—to fund meaningful, community-led environmental initiatives. After hosting a series of “Growing Roots” events and listening closely to Métis voices around BC, the Conservation Department committed 100% of donated funds to support wildfire readiness in high-risk areas.
In response to member concerns about rising temperatures and increasing wildfire threats—particularly in communities like Clearwater—BCMF used the donations to purchase W.A.S.P. Wildfire Home Protection Kits. These specialized kits are designed to provide critical support during wildfire emergencies, helping families protect their homes by setting up external sprinkler systems that create a barrier against encroaching flames.
On April 12th, the announcement of this wildfire program laid the foundation for the program’s rollout and demonstrated the power of community-led climate action. The event also included a special luncheon hosted by NTACCS to welcome BCMF staff, celebrate the ongoing partnership, and thank the local fire departments from Clearwater, Blackpool, and Vavenby, who were invited in recognition of their continued service and dedication to community safety.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the support that made this possible,” said Angel Fisher, Director of Conservation for the BCMF Conservation Department. “It means a lot to be able to show up for our communities in a real and practical way. Announcing this initiative and doing it alongside our partners at NTACCS and local fire departments made this a truly meaningful event.”
The luncheon was an opportunity to deepen relationships, recognize frontline fire crews, and highlight BCMF’s long-standing support of NTACCS, which has included pandemic relief, youth and elder programs, cultural events, and environmental projects.
“BCMF has always believed in putting community voices first,” said Keith Henry, President of the BC Métis Federation. “We’re proud to stand with our partners in Clearwater and the surrounding region. Our thanks go out to the NTACCS team, the Conservation Department, our donors, and especially to the brave firefighting personnel who are vital to protecting our communities during wildfire season.”
This initiative is a powerful example of what happens when Métis-led organizations, local partners, and frontline responders come together with a shared commitment to protecting lives, homes, and the environment.
