Vancouver, British Columbia — October 8, 2025 —The BC Métis Federation (BCMF) applauds the recent decision by the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) to maintain the Métis Commission for Children and Families of BC (MCCFBC) as the designated representative for Métis children and families under the Child, Family and Community Service Act and the Adoption Act.
Earlier this year, MCFD consulted Métis organizations across the province about a proposed change that would have replaced the MCCFBC with the Métis Nation of BC (MNBC) as the sole designated representative. BCMF consistently opposed this proposal, expressing serious concern that such a change would have excluded BCMF families and perpetuated systemic discrimination within the child welfare system.
BCMF President Keith Henry welcomed MCFD’s decision, calling it a step toward fair representation and genuine reconciliation.
“This is an important and positive decision for Métis families across British Columbia,” said BCMF President Keith Henry. “By maintaining the Métis Commission for Children and Families of BC as the designated representative, MCFD has chosen fairness, inclusivity, and respect for all Métis people—not just those affiliated with a single organization. This decision ensures that no Métis child or family will be treated as second-class within the system, and it reflects a renewed provincial commitment to reconciliation and meaningful consultation.”
BCMF views MCFD’s choice as a victory for transparency, equity, and good governance. The organization maintains that the Métis Commission, as an independent and apolitical body, is best positioned to ensure that every Métis child and family—regardless of political affiliation—receives culturally appropriate advocacy and support.
BCMF’s full feedback and submissions on the matter, including its May 2025 response and related correspondence, are available online.
