Vancouver, British Columbia — January 27, 2026 — The BC Métis Federation (BCMF) is responding to the recently announced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA) and Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC), which presents the agreement as advancing housing and wellness outcomes for all Métis people across British Columbia.

While BCMF welcomes all efforts to improve access to safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate housing, the MoU and its accompanying public statements raise serious concerns about representation and inclusion. The agreement suggests that MNBC is positioned to serve all Métis in British Columbia; however, MNBC has repeatedly refused to assist Métis members of BCMF. As a result, BCMF members risk being excluded from housing pathways and supports that may flow from this agreement.

BCMF President Keith Henry has formally written to AHMA to clarify these concerns and to challenge claims that the MoU is truly “community-driven” or representative of all Métis in the province. In the letter, BCMF emphasizes that community-driven work must be demonstrated through documented engagement, inclusive governance, and clear accountability—not assumed through affiliation with a single organization.

“In British Columbia, Métis people have diverse histories, communities, and representative bodies,” said Keith Henry, President of BCMF. “When agreements imply that one organization speaks for all Métis, they risk reinforcing exclusion rather than addressing it. BCMF remains committed to working collaboratively, but Métis people must not be filtered out of housing access based on political affiliation.”

BCMF remains hopeful that AHMA will engage directly with BCMF to ensure that Métis housing initiatives are inclusive, non-discriminatory, and reflective of the full diversity of Métis communities in British Columbia. BCMF has invited AHMA to meet and to formalize pathways that support BCMF members alongside any existing agreements, ensuring that no Métis families are left behind.
