The presence of Métis in Vancouver’s early history is often overlooked, yet it tells an important story. This video from the BCMF Research team looks at the historical evidence of Métis living in squatter shacks along the foot of Abbott Street. The records and stories from the 1890s and early 1900s mention the presence of “half-breeds” along the waterfront, often marginalized and branded as criminals. Today, there is no trace of this settlement. This forgotten chapter provides a glimpse into the Métis experience in Vancouver, where their presence has been removed and buried.
