Metis Federation of Canada Approved for Intervenor Status

BC Métis Federation congratulates the leadership of the Métis Federation of Canada who have been granted legal standing by the Supreme Court this week. The following is the letter from President Robert Pilon.

We’re very pleased to announce that the Métis Federation of Canada has successfully achieved Intervenor status in the upcoming Harry Daniels Federal Court of Appeal. With the support and direction of our lawyers from Devlin Gailus Westaway, we will now have the opportunity to present our argument to the Supreme Court of Canada, telling the true story of our people which includes Métis from communities in all regions of Canada.

To get this far in the very short time that the MFC has been in place is no small feat, and it’s important to note that not all applicants were successful. With the diligent work of a small number of people, the financial support of both individuals and many of our treaty partner organizations, and the guidance of our lawyers, we have achieved an important milestone in what will certainly be a historic case. A sincere thanks to everyone – especially Sebastien Malette – who had a part in helping us in this endeavour. And while this is only the first step towards a more inclusive Métis recognition, it’s a critical one in achieving our vision of uniting the Métis in Canada – from coast to coast to coast.
