Nova Métis Heritage Association Annual General Meeting

(Surrey, BC) BC Métis Federation leadership attended the Nova Métis Heritage Association (Nova) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Surrey this past weekend. Nova represents over 2000 members and is considered the largest membership based Métis community organization in BC. The Nova AGM saw approximately 30 members in attendance to review the current status of the organization and discuss key issues relevant to their organization. They also held their elections for their board positions.

BC Métis Federation has a Statement of Cooperation (SOC) signed several years ago with Nova and President Mr. Keith Henry attended and provided an update on activities. President Henry presented and updated key topics including; communication (coffee talk, Facebook page, email updates), Federal Government engagement, Provincial Government engagement, Daniels Case, Consultation Office and Metis Economic Development Corporation.

The BC Métis Federation also referenced Nova community specific updates this past year such as support for Nova representatives to attend the Industry Forum and AGM in Kamloops in September, ongoing engagement regarding the proposed Kinder Morgan Canada Trans Mountain Project, Education support together related to Surrey School District #36, support for Louis Riel Day, partnership with Fusion Festival, and support for the Nova youth project.

One of the most significant discussions was related to the Ministry of Children and Family Development and the Métis foster family in the case of “SS”. There was strong support for the position of the BC Métis Federation and the Métis foster family. The Nova election was held and 9 board members were elected. BC Métis Federation congratulates re-elected President Ken Fisher and the 2 Vice President’s Anthony Krilow and Harland Coles. There were a number of “At Large” board members to support the Nova board.

BC Métis Federation President Henry stated; “The meeting was excellent with a strong turn out of local members and the commitment was evident throughout the day. Congratulations to the board and we look forward to working together in the future. Congratulations Nova President Ken Fisher, the Métis community in Surrey has once again proven their strong support for your position as leader.”
