(Vancouver, BC) – The BC Métis Federation and partner communities continued Métis cultural work throughout British Columbia by ensuring Métis culture was contributing to Canada Day this past week.
The BC Métis Federation Summer of Culture continued this week as Métis cultural events were showcased for three days on July 1st – 3rd at the Klahowya Village in Stanley Park. Métis Days featured Métis jigging by Rowan and Quinn, world class fiddling by JJ Lavallee and his band, traditional Métis sash weaving by Mechtild Morin, support from the Michif Historical and Cultural Preservation Society, and elder support with the Métis Silvertip Swingers.
BC Metis Federation President Keith Henry stated, “This week BC Métis Federation invested in our Métis people to support a world class Métis cultural showcase. We had visitors from several countries including Iran, United States, Australia, China, Scotland, plus several others. In fact we estimate over 3500 people visited the Klahowya Village and enjoyed our Métis showcase this week!”
BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “I am so proud of our team and dedicated volunteers. It was amazing to have JJ Lavallee performing and we must acknowledge the relentless work of Derrick Whiteskycloud for emceeing throughout the three days to ensure success. Together we have laid out a vision to support Métis culture and this has brought together many volunteers and new BC Métis Federation members. We know that through these events Métis people feel proud to be Métis and the non Métis people learn more about who we are each time. BC Métis Federation and our team are making a difference of Métis pride and demonstrating real leadership in this province. Métis people want to be part of an organization that makes them proud to be Métis, BC Métis Federation continues to achieve this each day. It is our honour to work to these objectives for all and be sure to watch for future Métis culture celebrations in July and August.”
