Skeena River Métis Festival Celebrates Métis Culture in Terrace

(Terrace, BC) – BC Métis Federation and the Skeena River Métis Community Association, one of the partner communities of the BC Métis Federation, are celebrating the success co-hosting their 1 Music Festival that was held over the weekend at Thornhill Community Hall in Terrace, British Columbia.

Skeena River Métis Community Association (SRMCA) is from Terrace located in north west British Columbia and represents a number of Métis members. SRMCA signed an agreement to work with the BC Métis Federation in July 2013 and since this time the organizations continue to collaborate and work and support one another.

BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry stated; “Thank you to the SRMCA leadership, volunteers, and performers for the collective work this weekend! There were a number of excellent performers including Arnold and Wayne Lucier, Cariboo North, Skeena North, Métis fiddler Rene Therrien and many others! Thank you to SRMCA President Elizabeth Pearce, board member Alan Sauve and others for their team work to ensure a successful event.”

SRMCA President Pearce stated; “The event was very enjoyable and we are extremely pleased with the success. It is clear cultural events are needed in Terrace and we will start planning for next year. I enjoyed the music and bringing family and community together. Thank you to all of the sponsors and partners who made this event a reality for our community.”

BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry added; “Thank you to the sponsors including TransCanada, Hawkair, Remax, M and M Supplies, CFNR Radio, Winsor Law, Terrace Husky, Triton Environmental, White River Helicopters, Terrace Bowling Lanes, Silvertip Promotions/Silvertip Signs, Westland Insurance, Spotless Laundry Mat, Your Décor, and Home Hardware. BC Métis Federation especially was proud to sponsor and contribute to the event through the work with TransCanada and it is great to see industry partners investing in our Métis cultural revitalization which is a priority for our members.”

BC Métis Federation Henry further added; “This was the last major Summer of Culture event for 2014 supported by the BC Métis Federation. Métis friends and members can still attend and enjoy and learn about our Métis culture at the Métis showcase as part of the Klahowya Village located in Vancouver’s Stanley Park until September 1st. This Métis Music Festival in Terrace was excellent with roughly 150-200 people in attendance over the weekend. It was a major success and our leadership was proud to be associated with this work.”

BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded; “I want to express my appreciation to Helen Martinot who was instrumental in arranging the bands, sound system, and many event details. The event was run very smoothly which contributed to the overall success. Helen is one half of the band Skeena North with Jim Braid and their together was excellent. Thank you from the BC Métis Federation leadership Jim and Helen.”
