The BC Métis Federation (BCMF) looks forward to welcoming you as a new member. Before starting the application process, it is important to ensure you have all the required documentation and other assets ready to upload. As part of your application, you will need:

Long form birth certificate
Supporting birth records for Métis ancestral line
Genealogy chart
Passport style digital photo
Signature specimen

For those applying for family memberships, you will need all of the above for every member of the family.

The online membership application process is very simple—just complete the form below and submit your membership fee (mail in a cheque or pay online). You will need to have a recent passport-quality photo that you can upload—for yourself and any for family members if applicable. You may also complete the PDF application form and mail it in.

Full or Associate Membership

To become a BCMF Full Member with voting rights you must also submit your BCMF genealogy chart going back five generations. Without your genealogy record you can only be approved as a BCMF Associate Member. Click here to learn more about BCMF membership categories.

Genealogy Record and Supporting Documents

To become a BCMF Full Member with voting rights you must also submit your genealogy chart with supporting documents going back five generations or up to 100 years (long form birth certificates, baptismal records, marriage certificate, death records, census, Scrip records). Without your genealogy record you can only be approved as a BCMF Associate Member.

We require that you sign your BCMF membership card. Please upload a signature specimen for each adult on your application. A Parent's signature will be used for all children's applications.

Consent to Release Confidential Information

The contents of your BC Métis Federation (BCMF) membership application are confidential. All personal information is protected by The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and may not be released to any individual, body agency or organization, without your written consent.

Purpose for the Disclosure of Personal Information

The BCMF will be using and sharing your information, to the extent necessary, towards historical research in relation to contemporary and historical Métis communities, traditions and customs. In addition to the purposes set forth above, your personal information may be used as follows:

to trace your ancestry
to research and record personal information as necessary for the exercise and preservation of cultural practices and tradition
for use in a public report concerning contemporary or historical communities and traditional Métis customs and practices for use as necessary in court proceedings
administrative BCMF Registry matters, disputes and hearings, and such other purposes and uses as may be required and deemed useful in advancing the cause of Métis citizens
proving and/or upholding Métis rights and entitlement and/or publicizing Métis issues
to consent to a search of the Indian Register to determine if I am a registered Indian

Sharing your Personal Information

By submitting this membership application, you consent to the use of your Personal Information as stated above, it will be shared, to the extent permitted by the Freedom of Information Act, and authorized researchers.

Your personal information will be stored in hard copy and as computer data at the BCMF head office and with authorized researchers as designated by the BCMF.
