On February 8th, the BC Métis Federation’s Conservation Department hosted its fourth conference, Our Planet, Our Future, in Victoria.
Held at the beautiful Oak Bay Beach Hotel, the gathering brought together over 60 participants for a day of insightful discussions, cultural engagement, and networking opportunities. The conference featured six dynamic presenters covering various topics, from sustainability and ship recycling to holistic land practices and beyond. Their expertise and passion gave attendees valuable knowledge and new perspectives on environmental conservation.
A highlight of the event was the featured Métis artist Louise Lambert of Wine Country Studios, who showcased six carefully curated pieces capturing the breathtaking landscapes of British Columbia. Her artwork added a powerful visual element to the conference, reinforcing the beauty of the natural world we strive to protect.
In the afternoon, participants participated in a hands-on cultural workshop led by a local Métis facilitator, where they could craft their own medicine bags. For many, this was their first experience with this tradition, making it a meaningful and memorable activity that deepened their cultural connection. The event concluded with an evening networking reception, providing a relaxed and welcoming space for attendees to continue conversations, build relationships, and reflect on the day’s discussions.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the conference. BCMF also wants to recognize the excellent and hard work of its Conservation Department to make this event such a success.
