Compaigni V’ni Dansi invites Vancouver to celebrate the life of Louis Riel, a true Canadian folk hero, with the Eighth Annual Louis Riel Day Celebration, an evening of Métis Dance, Music and Culture.
@ the Astorino’s Ballroom
Vancouver, BC
In addition to honouring Louis Riel, the festival is a chance to celebrate the vitality of contemporary Métis culture both locally and across Canada. Festivities begin at 7:30pm on Saturday November 16 at Astorino’s Ballroom, with an exciting line up of contemporary and traditional Métis artists. The evening will be hosted by award-winning filmmaker, writer, and teacher, Greg Coyes. Elder Tom McCallumis back again to regale us with his traditional stories, and he’s sure to keep us on the edge of our seats as he weaves with words, capturing our attention and our hearts.
Led by master jigger Yvonne Chartrand and Madelaine McCallum, the Louis Riel Métis Dancers will once again provide energy and heart with their traditional Métis jigging. JJ Lavallée, Sandy Scofield and Keith Hill will accompany the Louis Riel Métis Dancers, and JJ’s band After Party will play some music at a good ol’ Métis dance party after the show!
Saskatchewan’s RielCo Productions will also be presenting excerpts from John Coulter’s The Trial of Louis Riel. In its 47th year of performances, this is Canada’s 2nd-longest running play (after Anne of Green Gables). Based on the actual transcripts from the Louis Riel’s trial, it tackles topics like justice, land, language and race.
There will also be artisans selling beautiful goods and crafts.
Yvonne Chartrand from Compaigni V’ni Dansi said: “This evening is really a celebration for everyone and a reflection of our unique cultural heritage: the blending of First Nations and European.”
