Vancouver, British Columbia, July 4, 2024 — On June 29, the BC Métis Federation (BCMF) hosted two events in Vancouver as part of its “Finding Your Voice” Women’s Programming. The day started with the “Raising the Red Flags” Relationship Awareness Seminar and was followed by a “Create Your Spirit Animal” painting workshop.

The empowering “Raising the Red Flags” Relationship Awareness Seminar focused on raising awareness about early signs of potential abuse in relationships before individuals feel trapped. The seminar was led by Lisa Matyszewski, a Training & Development Specialist at the BC Society of Transition Houses with 15 years of experience in social services.

The session aimed to empower women by providing them with the tools to recognize potential red flags early on. By understanding these signs and underlying beliefs, participants can make informed decisions about their relationships and avoid situations where they might become trapped in abusive dynamics. “This relationship awareness seminar is essential for anyone who is looking to improve the health of their relationships. After generations of abuse and erasure at the hands of colonial governments, it can sometimes feel that our inner compasses have been thrown off track. Conversations like these help reacquaint us with our strength as Métis women,” said Louise Lambert, project lead for the BCMF’s women’s programming.

The “Create Your Spirit Animal” painting workshop started with a guided meditation designed to help participants connect with their personal Spirit Animal. Then they used vibrant acrylics to express their spiritual insights on canvas.

The workshop honoured Métis teachings of animism, which recognizes a spiritual presence in the natural world, intertwining spiritual and physical realms. The day culminated in a sharing circle, where attendees discussed their artwork and its personal and spiritual significance. “It was impressive to see how passionate and energized all of the participants were,” said Danielle Desjarlais, BCMF Community Coordinator. “It was truly a privilege to have the opportunity to engage with a group of Métis women who are expressing themselves through art.”
