(Vancouver, BC) – BC Métis Federation initiated the Summer of Culture campaign beginning in May of 2013. The Summer of Culture was a strategy created by the BC Métis Federation and many partners to showcase Métis culture to the public while increasing pride and recognition within the Métis communities throughout British Columbia. BC Métis Federation supported ten (10) events held throughout British Columbia including Burnaby, Surrey, Prince George, Sydney, Williams Lake/McLeese Lake, and Vancouver.
The Labour Day long weekend marked the finale of the Summer of Culture event schedule with Métis Days at Klahowya Village. This event brought together a number of volunteers and partners including the Michif Historical and Cultural Preservation Society, Métis Silver Tip Swingers, Métis elder Val Beauchamp, Louis Riel Métis Dancers, Métis Musicians Keith Hill and Amy Eustergerling, Kelly Lake Métis Settlement Society cultural showcase, and well known Métis historians and authors George and Terry Goulet. In additional other Métis community members attended such as Richard and Kay Klyne who shared their photography work for visitors to enjoy plus Nova Métis Heritage Association President Ken Fisher and Vancouver Métis Citizens Society Interim President Ron Paradis.
BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry stated; “The BC Métis Federation said we would do it and we did. We spent hundreds of hours setting up and supporting ten (10) cultural events and the Métis Days finale was a great way to finish this summer campaign. Métis Days attendance was excellent with thousands of visitors who came through the Métis cultural showcase over the weekend. In addition there were several from our Métis community who came out to enjoy the culture and beautiful Métis cultural showcases.”
BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry concluded; “I thank absolutely everyone for the success of Métis Days and the entire Summer of Culture campaign. We reached tens of thousands of British Columbians and visitors from throughout the world educating about Métis culture. Our commitment to Métis culture through our board and partners has been our cornerstone to success. We will have many more events in the coming months and thank you to one any all.”
