Metis Identity Report – Summary of Senate Committee Recommendations

Many people in the Metis community across British Columbia and Canada remain surprised by the recommendations and outcome of the recent Senate report on Metis Identity entitled “The People Who Own Themselves, Recognition of Metis Identity in Canada.”

The Senate findings and recommendations have important implications on how Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), on behalf of the Federal Government, are not addressing the Metis identity questions properly for all Metis people.

Metis historians and respected authors George and Terry Goulet, who also presented to the Senate Committee, have prepared a summary review of the report.  This report will have significant impacts in the future in terms of how governments work with all Metis people.
