Moving Forward – Christmas Party Reunites Community

(Surrey, BC) BC Métis Federation leadership and the community in Surrey with Nova Métis Heritage Association (Nova) held the annual Christmas Party in Surrey this past weekend. There was very good attendance with approximately 150 members enjoying culture and festive celebrations throughout the afternoon. This was one of several Métis community Christmas gatherings supported by the BC Métis Federation this December 2014 Christmas season.

A number of community families and Métis Santa attended providing excitement for all. There were gifts provided to all families. Métis cultural entertainment from JJ Lavallee and his band along with Métis jigging with Rowan and Quinn Pickering added that cultural celebration. A special showcase was provided when an up and coming Métis fiddler, 10 year old Jack Campbell, played Métis fiddler music for the first time ever after being inspired watching JJ Lavallee at a previous community event.

BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry stated, “The event was a success and I believe our largest one in Surrey since co-hosting in 2012. There was a lot of excitement and giving back to the community and children makes our sacrifices worthwhile.” Nova President Mr. Ken Fisher stated, “This was a success and I am very pleased with the partnership with the BC Métis Federation to make this annual event come together with our members and several others throughout the Lower Mainland.”

BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “Our board attended from all parts of British Columbia and we are proud to show our unity together moving forward. This event was healing in many aspects for me personally and professionally. We all need to use this time of year to reflect and focus on what is best for our communities and families. I am proud to serve and support wherever I can and will do so going forward in a proud way. From our leadership to all members and community leadership we wish each of you our most sincere wishes for a wonderful holiday season.” Be sure to check out the videos and pictures from the Christmas Party on our facebook page at
