(Surrey, BC) The Nova Métis Heritage Association (Nova), a partner community with the BC Métis Federation, held their Annual General Meeting in North Vancouver at the Cadet Hall Whalley Legion in Surrey this last Saturday, November 16th.
The Nova President Ken Fisher chaired the meeting with support from the board. There were approximately 40 members in attendance. Discussions about future cultural events, the proposed Kinder Morgan Canada Transmountain Pipeline Project, and key issues such as organizational sustainability were held. BC Métis Federation leadership also attended and provided important updates including recent work to support Nova with the recent Enhancement Agreement that was signed this past summer, work together on the Fusion Festival in Surrey, update on the human rights claim against the Federal and Provincial governments, and overall progress of the BC Métis Federation.
BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry stated, “We continue to be proud to attend these community events, answer questions, and focus on issues relevant to the members of the Nova. They have a membership base of approximately 2000 members largely from Surrey. The community has specific concerns and requests and BC Métis Federation continues to support their leadership and members.”
BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “This is another excellent community meeting. We spoke about the importance of the Trial of Louis Riel and BC Métis Federation agreed to take concrete actions to support specific Nova identified needs. The members asked a number of questions and there continues to be growing appreciation and support for the work of the BC Métis Federation. The recent raffle was an excellent opportunity to work together and the funds raised by Nova and BC Métis Federation will greatly assist the organizations with roughly $6,000 dollars. On behalf of the BC Métis Federation board and team members we thank Nova President Ken Fisher for the work together. The goal is to support all Métis people represented by Nova.”
