Canada is once again experiencing a challenging wildfire season. Communities across several provinces have been impacted by fast-moving wildfires, prolonged drought, and hazardous smoke conditions. Across the country, thousands of people have been displaced from their homes, emergency responders continue to work tirelessly on the front lines, and many families are facing uncertainty as evacuation orders and alerts continue to change.

Here in British Columbia, the situation has become especially concerning over the past several days. A number of rapidly growing wildfires have prompted evacuation orders and alerts, particularly in parts of the Okanagan and Interior. A provincial state of emergency has been declared as emergency crews respond to numerous active fires, many of which remain out of control due to extremely dry conditions, high temperatures, and strong winds. Entire communities have been forced to evacuate, homes and infrastructure have been lost, and families have had to leave with little notice. Tragically, there has also been a loss of life.

Our thoughts are with every family and every community affected by these fires. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the wildfire crews, emergency responders, RCMP, volunteers, and countless others who are working around the clock to protect lives, property, and our forests.

If you are under an evacuation order or alert, please follow the direction of local emergency officials. Do not wait until conditions worsen before preparing to leave. Pack essential medications, identification, important documents, pet supplies, and enough necessities to support your household for several days.

If you are not currently under an alert, now is the time to prepare an emergency kit and make a family evacuation plan.

What does a state of emergency mean?

A provincial state of emergency is declared when an event, such as widespread wildfires, poses a significant threat to public safety and requires extraordinary coordination and resources. It gives the Province temporary legal authority to respond more quickly by coordinating emergency services, directing evacuations, protecting critical infrastructure, managing access to affected areas, and ensuring resources can be deployed where they are needed most. While a state of emergency does not automatically mean everyone is at immediate risk, it reflects the seriousness of the situation and helps ensure communities receive the support they need as conditions continue to evolve rapidly.
