Warm Reception for BC Mètis Federation at Nova AGM

(Surrey, BC) BC Métis Federation representatives attended the Nova Métis Heritage Association (Nova) Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at their office in Surrey earlier today. Nova has approximately 2000 members and has been in operation for a number of years. Their AGM was attended by approximately 35 members of the society. Nova has signed a Statement of Cooperation with the BC Métis Federation in 2011 and the agreement recognizes the importance of attendance at such meetings when possible.

Nova members elected their board new board, reviewed the finances, discussed priority issues, and addressed a number of questions regarding future steps. BC Métis Federation President Keith Henry, along with Bev Lambert, Maxine Lavallee and Sherry Daniels, was invited as a guest speaker to report on the progress of the BC Métis Federation. The Nova members asked a number of questions and identified priorities such as the environment and community capacity as integral to future success.

BC Métis Federation President Henry stated, “It was a positive day. Nova members were very welcoming and I had a lot of success to share as BC Métis Federation continues to get results in all we do. Nova members appreciated the work of the BC Métis Federation and we all know the real issues of their community are what matters. Nova needs support to meet the needs of their members, a community place to meet and celebrate our culture, a responsive leadership. I believe Nova leaders and members feel BC Métis Federation is supporting these needs.”

BC Métis Federation President Henry concluded, “I congratulate Nova President Ken Fisher, Vice Presidents Harland and Ronald Coles, plus numerous others who now compose the 11 new Nova board members. We have all agreed that a next step will be to support a Louis Riel Day event on November 17th at the Nova office. BC Métis Federation representatives are working to support this event with Nova and author and Louis Riel activist David Doyle will provide a presentation about the history and story of Louis Riel. This will be an event for the whole family and watch for future event details.”
